2017 VOTD_08 - Covenants: Highway To Exemption 3

2017 Voice of The Day 08                                                                              Covenants: Highway To Exemption 3                                                                      Genesis 22:1-2
And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here I am. And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of. KJV
Today, we will compare the demands of a Promise which is tough but doable as we saw with Abram with the demands of a Covenant.

  • In Genesis 22, the Bible opens with a very curious but dangerous statement. God tempted Abraham. This already presupposes trouble and is indicative of the nature of the demand
  • In this engagement with Abraham, God gave no guarantees before obedience unlike in Genesis 12.
  • The demand was Abraham's only son. At over a hundred years old and Sarah at well over 90, the future looked bleak if God took Isaac

At this point, Ishmael and his mum had been sent packing and so there was no fall back option. Moreover, God did not make any promise of any future or the possibility of any other baby at this point in time

  1. The location of the sacrifice was three days away. This was ample time to change his mind
  2. The conversation was with Abraham alone and so he had a Herculean task of explaining Isaac's disappearance if he didn't return with him. There was nobody to corroborate his story. He was alone!
  3. These circumstances clearly show that Abraham was not in a pretty nice state as a loving father or even a responsible man in the natural sense during this engagement.

A man that God will cut a covenant with will pass through this highway. He would be brought to a point where he is alone with God and would find it difficult to explain his situation to others around him because he won't make sense!

Covenants are however the highway to exemption from the evil of the times hence our need to understand how to walk in covenants. May you be more enlightened as we progress in this teaching.
